Um amigo identificou-me num post no facebook. Devias fazer isto. "Sim, parece giro. Talvez." Outro veio ter comigo - não gostavas de fazer isto? "Ok. Vou ver disso um dia destes." Candidatei-me sem pensar muito nisso. Afinal, essa é a essência de por que fiz este blog. O que eu não sabia era que isto envolvia uma exposição. Uma ex-po-si-ção. (Medo) Num museu a sério. (Medo) A sério. (Medo) Já lá chegaremos. | Someone tagged me in a facebook post. You should try this. "Alright, I might." A friend approached me - wouldn't you like to do this? "Ok. I'll look into it." I applied, without thinking much of it. That is, after all, the spirit of why this blog exists. What I didn't know was that it would involve an exhibition. An ex-hi-bi-tion. (Scared) In a proper museum. (Scared) Mu-se-um. (Scared) We'll get to it soon enough.
Pint of Science - Creative Reactions
"Isto" era a secção artística do Pint of Science, chamada Creative Reactions. | "This" was Pint of Science's artistic section - Creative Reactions.
Já tinha ouvido do festival Pint of Science. Um querido amigo, Matthew Young (um tipo maravilhoso, contratem-no para qualquer trabalho de participação pública - ele é o homem para o trabalho), organiza-o em Nottingham. Mas não fazia ideia no que me estava a meter - a parte da Creative Reactions. Já tinham ouvido falar deste festival? | I had heard about the Pint of Science part of it. A dear friend of mine, Matthew Young (wonderful guy, hire him for any public engagement gigs - he is the best), organizes it in Nottingham. But I had no idea what I was getting myself into - the Creative Reactions part of it. Have you heard about any of it?
O Pint of Science (tradução livre: "Jola" de ciência) é um festival internacional de comunicação da comunidade científica com o público geral, no qual cientistas vão a um ambiente tão informal como um bar e falam da sua investigação com quem estiver interessado. Estás? Não vejo como não - o festival abrange temas tão variados como astronomia e neurociência, dinossauros e robótica. Ninguém tem desculpa para não participar. Se ciências não são a tua onda vem pela cerveja e vais render-te. Procura o local mais próximo de ti aqui. O festival começou em 2012 em Londres e Nottingham seguiu-lhe o rasto (já falei do meu amigo Matt, não já?). | Pint of Science is in fact an international science-meets-public festival, where scientists come to the pub to talk about their research with anyone interested in it. Are you? It covers such a broad range of subjects that nobody has an excuse not to engage. I'm confident everyone finds something interesting between astronomy and neuroscience, dinosaurs and robotics. If science isn't your thing - come for the beer and in the end you'll be asking questions. Check your closest location here. It started in 2012 in London and Nottingham quickly followed (again - Matt).
Em 2017 o festival aconteceu em simultâneo em pelo menos 5 bares em Nottingham, durante quase uma semana - de 15 a 18 de Maio. Muitas sessões esgotadas. Adesão do público a múltiplos temas. Mas a secção "Creative Reactions" era inédita nesta cidade. O desafio do Creative Reactions é expandir a maneira como o público vê a ciência, emparelhando um cientista e um artista local. | In 2017 it run in at least 5 different locations (I'm pretty sure there were more) over almost a week , May 15th-18th, in Nottingham. Creative Reactions was a new addition to previous editions. The challenge behind Creative Reactions is to pair scientist and artists to get a fresh perspective on the research.
A minha experiência | My experience

Depois de me candidatar, fui contactado por alguém da equipa de organização do Creative Reactions (Shalaka Kurup), que me fez chegar alguns detalhes, nomeadamente a calendarização geral. Este contacto inicial aconteceu em Fevereiro. Em Março, os artistas receberam uma lista de cientistas que se tinham voluntariado para fazer parte desta iniciativa, bem como uma descrição sumária da sua investigação. Nós (os artistas) respondemos com uma lista dos nossos 3 cientistas favoritos e a equipa de organização fez tudo o que pode para emparelhar artistas e cientistas de acordo com a sua preferência. | If you are curious about how it works, here it is. After applying, I was contacted by someone from the Creative reactions organisation team (Shalaka Kurup - I'm sorry for all the trouble I've given) and given some details. This happened in February. In March, we (the artists) were given a list of scientists willing to participate in this initiative, along with a brief summary of their research. We then had to choose our top three and the Creative Reactions team did their best to pair us.
Eu fui emparelhado com o Martino Franchi, um cientista que trabalha em Notts (diminutivo de Nottingham). Combinamos encontrar-nos num pub para travarmos conhecimento e conversar. Mas o Martino atrasou-se - ligou-me: "Sou italiano. Costumo chegar atrasado. Mas não tão atrasado quanto hoje!". Percebi com esse caricato primeiro contacto que o Martino pertence a uma espécie rara, contudo bastante comum na comunidade científica, que é um sonhador com os pés na terra. De facto ele chegou tão tão atrasado que eu fiz todo um desenho do pub onde estava. Talvez o ponha aqui um dia destes. Tive sorte, porque estava uma tarde bonita, com sol, coisa rara em Nottingham. | I was paired with Martino Franchi. He is a scientist working in Notts. We met at a pub (where else?) to get to know each other. Martino was late - "I'm Italian. I'm usually late, but not this late." he said over the phone. I immediately felt he would be a down-to-earth yet dreamy guy. Contradiction in terms? No. Those are a rare species, often found doing science. He was so so late that I managed to make an entire piece on the pub itself, maybe I'll publish it here someday.
No beer garden (esplanada) conversamos sobre a investigação que o Martino faz. Ele estuda como o exercício fisico afeta o envelhecimento. Quando lhe perguntei acerca da sua vida para lá da ciência, o Martino mostrou-se um espirito aberto e não hesitou em responder. Fiquei contente por saber que ele tinha uma familia de quem se entusiasmava a falar, em Saronno, uma ligação duradoura ao basketball e uma miriade de actividades sociais que mal consegui acompanhar. A conversa resvalou sobre a dificuldade de equilibrar a vida académica com a "vida real", antes do Martino fugir para o seu compromisso seguinte. Mas por essa altura eu tinha bastante com que avançar. | It was a nice afternoon - rare in Nottingham - and the beer garden was sunny. We had a pint and talked about his research, on how exercise affects aging. I was also interested in his life beside research and he was very open-minded to talk about that. I was glad to hear that he had a very nice family in Saronno, a deep connection with basketball and had a handful of social activities. We then proceeded to discuss the troubles of juggling science and "real life"! Plenty to go on with!..

- Nota-se que vem de uma familia latina - os seus laços familiares mantém-se fortes, especialmente com o seu pai. | You can tell he comes from a latin country - his family bonds are tight, specially with his dad (congrats sir, you've raised a nice guy).
- Descreve a sua investigação como estimulante e intricada. | He describes his research as stimulating and puzzling.

A partir destas informações comecei a trabalhar na peça. E mudei de ideias. E trabalhei um pouco mais. E voltei a mudar de ideias. E trabalhei. E pedi conselhos (obrigada aos suspeitos do costume!). E trabalhei. Um método pouco usual para mim. Um desafio bom, que me fez crescer. Este é resultado final. | From there I worked on the piece. And changed my mind. And worked. And changed my mind again. And worked. And asked for advice. And worked. It was an unusual process for me. It was certainly challenging, but I felt that I grew while doing it. This was the end result.

The exhibition | A exposição
No fim a peça foi apresentada na exposição do Creative Reactions, no Nottingham Contemporary, onde também decorreu a festa final do festival. A equipa de organização do festival está de parabéns. | In the end it was presented in the Creative Reactions exhibition in the Nottingham Contemporary, where the final party took place.
